Save the fish in the Volta Lake-Mr Alabi Bortey

Tapa-Abotoase (V/R), Sept. 29, GNA – Mr Alabi Bortey, Assistant Director of Improvement of Policy and Institution of Co-Management of the Volta Lake has warned that the depletion of fish in the Volta Lake was on the ascendancy and stringent measures were needed to save the lake.

Speaking at the inauguration of a 13-member community-based Volta Lake Management Committee at Tapa-Abotoase, Mr Bortey said careful studies showed that the annual fish catch from the lake had been declining drastically.

He said the government had initiated a pilot scheme with Asuogyaman, Kpando and Jasikan District Assemblies to educate all the people along the lake to protect the resources of the lake.

Special courses are to be organised for the members of the community-based and district management committees on how best to tackle the preservation of the lake problem.

Earlier, Mr Moses Segu, an Assistant Police Superintendent stationed at Worawora, who is the Chairman of the District Lake Management Committee, inaugurated the 13-member committee with a call on the lake dwellers to be prepared to adopt themselves to new income-generating businesses when temporary ban on fishing in the lake is announced.

The committee’s chairman is chief fisherman, Mr Jackson Abiw.
