Fomena (Ash), Sept 20, GNA- The Adansi Traditional Council is spending 100 million cedis as bursaries for secondary and tertiary students in the area this academic year.
A total of 180 students are benefiting from the scheme, which was introduced three years ago with each student receiving 500,000 cedis annually.
Mr Ernest Amoako-Asante, the Senior Registrar of the Council, who disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Fomena on Saturday, said the Council was using part of its share of the mineral royalties to fund the bursary scheme.
He said more than 40 million cedis was spent during the first year of the scheme for 60 students.
“The number of students was increased to 120 students during the second year of the scheme of which over 60 million cedis was disbursed”, he said.
Mr Amoako-Asante said as a result of the traditional council’s bursary package, some students who would have stayed out of school because of poverty were now in school.
Nana Adu Ampoti Dwaah II, the Special Assistant to the Registrar, said it was important for the students to work harder to justify the monies being spent on them.
