ECG, VRA working to restore power to northern Volta

Hohoe, Sept. 17, GNA – A combined team of engineers from the Volta River Authority (VRA) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) are feverishly working around the clock to restore power to the northern part of the Volta Region due to a mechanical fault on the VRA 10 mega volts ampere (MVA) power transformer at Kpando.

Apart from the power outage, the situation have also had a rippling toll on the water supply systems in the Kpando, Hohoe, Jasikan, Kadjebi, Nkwanta and the newly created Krachi East District, affecting business and industry, for three days on.

Mr Daniel Acquah-Labi, Regional Engineer of ECG who disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency in an interview on Friday said the fault which occurred last Sunday at about 0600 hrs was remedied and power re-connected at about 1700 hrs on Monday, only for the problem to surface again on Wednesday at midnight.

He however, said a new 20 MVA transformer is on site at Kpando but experts to erect the new transformer from the United Kingdom are yet to arrive within the next week or so, for the installation.

On the interim, Mr Acquah-Labi said a smaller 69 kilo volts transformer at Kpeve in the newly created South Dayi District would be linked up to Kpando to begin a load shedding exercise.

He said the load-shedding exercise which had been categorised into three-lots may commence by 1700 hrs on Friday with the arrival of some materials to site from Accra.

Mr Acquah-Labi therefore, appealed to the people in the affected areas to bear with ECG and VRA, since personnel of the two companies were enthusiastically working hard to restore power and pleaded for any inconveniences the power outage might have brought to its numerous clients in the affected areas.
