Accra, Sept. 17, GNA – The Australian High Commissioner, Mr. Jon Richardson and staff from the High Commission in Accra would on Saturday join Ghanaian volunteers to participate in the “Clean Up the World'” activities in Tema.
The cleanup is being undertaken in conjunction with the HATOF Foundation, a statement from the Australian High Commission in Accra said on Friday.
“In the true spirit of ‘Clean Up the World’, the Australian team will roll up its sleeves and work with Ghanaian volunteers to collect rubbish and waste in the streets of Tema,” the statement said. The Australian High Commission is donating two million cedis to help with the acquisition of gloves, brooms and other equipment.
“Clean Up the World Day’ “brings together over 40 million volunteers around the globe who give up their time to make their local area a cleaner, healthier and safer place to live. The statement said the “Clean Up” concept began in Australia with “Clean Up Australia Day.”
“On this day each year, communities across Australia come together to clean up their local areas. The ‘Clean Up Australia’ programme received widespread international acclaim as a simple, practical and inexpensive way for communities to put into place the ‘Think Global: Act Local’ approach to environmental management.”
The ‘Clean Up the World’ organisation is based in Sydney, Australia and since 1993 it has organised successful ‘Clean Up’ programme in almost every country in the world.
The programme’s partners include the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), Australian airline, Qantas and the Australian Government through its Embassies and High Commissions worldwide.
