Court remands carpenter for defilement

Agona (Ash), Sept. 14, GNA – The Agona Magistrate Court on Friday remanded a 30-year-old carpenter in prison custody for allegedly defiling a 16-year-old girl. Sampson Owusu pleaded guilty to the charge and will re-appear on September 24. Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Ransford Kornor told the court that at about 1000 hours on September 7, this year, Owusu was invited by the victim’s mother to undertake some repair work in her sitting room. He said after the completion of the work, the accused left the house with the victim’s mother, who was travelling to Kumasi and saw her off at the Agona lorry park to board a vehicle.

Chief Inspector Kornor said Owusu, who espied the victim in the house while doing the repair work, quickly returned to the house and sneaked into the sitting room where the victim sat. He said the accused then overpowered the victim and pushed her head under a chair and forcibly had sex with her. The prosecutor said the victim’s elder brother returned to the house shortly after learnt about the incident.

Chief Inspector Kornor said the victim and the brother waited until their mother returned and they reported the incident to the Agona police, who arrested Owusu. The police, he said, issued the victim with a medical form and she was taken to the Asaman Seventh-Day Adventist (SDA) Hospital, where it was proved that her hymen had been broken.
