Ghana’s Parliamentary Delegates Arrives

Accra, Sept 13, GNA – Ghana’s five-member parliamentary delegation to the 50th Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) meeting held in Quebec, Canada, returned home last night. Other members of the delegation led by the Speaker of Parliament Mr Peter Ala Adjetey were the Majority Leader Mr Felix Owusu Agyemang, Minority Leader Mr Alban Bagbin, the Deputy Majority Whip Mrs Gifty Kusi and the Clerk of Parliament Mr Ken Tachie.

Speaking to journalists on arrival, the Speaker said the 10-day conference discussed, among other things the CPA plan of action for gender equality, the role of parliamentarians as well as the freedom of information act. Mr Ala Adjetey said most governments would want to operate away from the prying eyes of the people so the freedom of Information Act, when enacted would further help to strengthen democracy. He said the Commonwealth continued to look for a common ground on the freedom of Information Act so that the law, when enacted could share common features.

Mr Bagbin said a South African woman was elected as President of the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians. He said this was after members from the African region had met and taken a united position on who heads the Women in the Commonwealth Parliament. The Minority Leader stressed the need for media representation at such fora since they would be in the forefront as far as the freedom of information Act was concerned.
