Govt to rehabilitate National Theatre, build second in Kumasi

Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has announced plans by the government to rehabilitate the National Theatre in Accra and begin processes toward the construction of a second national theatre in Kumasi.

He made this known while presenting the 2026 Budget Statement and Economic Policy in Parliament on November 13, 2025.

According to Dr. Forson, the site acquisition and design for the new national theatre in Kumasi will commence in 2026 as part of efforts to expand Ghana’s cultural infrastructure and promote regional creative development.

The National Theatre in Accra, which was commissioned in 1992, has been due for major refurbishment to meet modern technical and safety standards.
