The government has announced plans to significantly upgrade the Ghana Air Force’s fleet starting in 2026, with Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson revealing that procurement processes will soon begin for six new aircraft, including four helicopters and two fixed-wing planes.
In his presentation of the 2026 Budget on Thursday, November 13, Dr. Forson explained that these acquisitions comprising four modern helicopters, one long-range aircraft, and one medium-range aircraft are expected to be delivered within four years after procurement is completed. The initiative forms part of a broader strategy to enhance the country’s defence readiness and strengthen the capabilities of the security services.
He underscored the critical role of the Ghana Air Force in safeguarding national security, noting that the institution supports a wide range of operations, including aerial surveillance, maritime patrols, troop movement, logistics support, air defence missions, disaster response, and medical evacuations.
Ato Forson also drew attention to the operational difficulties the Air Force faces due to an ageing fleet and rising maintenance costs, which undermine efficiency and readiness. The planned aircraft purchases are intended to close these gaps and improve the Force’s ability to respond rapidly to emergencies and security threats.
“The Ghana Air Force will be retooled. Beginning in 2026, the Government of Ghana will start procurement processes for the acquisition of four modern helicopters, one long-range, and one medium-range aircraft,” he stated.
He further reminded Parliament of earlier defence-related investments, noting: “Mr. Speaker, on 13th August, 2020, the Government of Ghana entered into a supplier’s credit agreement of US$80 million with Messrs. ELBIT Systems Land Ltd for the procurement of nineteen (19) Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) and related defence systems.”
