Justice Baffoe-Bonnie Dismisses Claims of Political Bias, Defends Qualification for Chief Justice Role

Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, nominee for Chief Justice of Ghana, has rejected claims that his selection by President John Mahama is politically motivated or a reward for past loyalty.

Appearing before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Monday, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie described such suggestions as unfounded, stressing that his long service and judicial experience make him fully qualified for the role.

“I cannot speak for what goes on in the President’s mind,” he said. “But I would be disappointed if my nomination was based solely on the perception that I supported him in 2013. That would be unfortunate. I believe my work and years on the bench speak for themselves.”

He pointed out that he has served on the Supreme Court for 17 years, longer than most of his colleagues, adding that his record and seniority justify his nomination.

“If I am to speak frankly, I would say I am the most senior among those currently serving. The colleague closest to me has been there for ten years, while others joined in 2005, 2019, and 2020. By that measure, I believe I qualify for the position,” he stated.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s nomination has sparked public debate, with critics alleging political favoritism. However, his vetting focused largely on his experience, judicial philosophy, and vision for Ghana’s justice system.

If approved by Parliament, he will formally replace Justice Gertrude Torkonoo, who was recently removed from office.
