Family of Seven Perish After Husband Allegedly Sets House on Fire at Dunkwa-Akyempim

A family of seven have lost their lives in a house fire at Akyempim in the Upper Denkyira East Municipality of the Central Region.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) confirmed the devastating incident, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday, November 1, 2025.

According to a statement issued by the Service, the Dunkwa-On-Offin Fire Station received a distress call at around 1:04 a.m. and immediately dispatched a response team to the scene.

Despite their efforts, the inferno claimed the lives of all seven occupants: a mother, her eldest daughter, and five children aged between one and fifteen years.

The fire is believed to have been deliberately set by the husband of the deceased woman before fleeing the house.

Firefighters arrived at approximately 1:20 a.m. to find one of the four bedrooms of the house completely engulfed in flames and locked with a padlock.

“The crew managed to contain the blaze by 1:32 a.m., successfully preventing it from spreading to the other three rooms,” the Service reported.

The body of the suspect was later discovered hanging from a tree in a nearby bush, suggesting he may have taken his own life after the act.

The charred remains of the victims were handed over to the Ghana Police Service at Atekyim for further investigation.

The statement signed by Divisional Officer Grade Two (DO II) Abdul Wasiu Hudu, the Central Regional Public Relations Officer, the GNFS extended its condolences to the bereaved family and the affected community.

The Service also urged the public to report fire incidents promptly to enable timely response and rescue efforts, and provided emergency contact numbers: 112, 0201500360, and 0302772446 for quick access in emergencies.

The GNFS reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property, assuring citizens that it remains dedicated to preventing such tragedies through public education and rapid emergency response.
