Sports Ministry Settles Black Queens WAFCON Bonuses After Egypt Triumph

Ghana’s senior women’s national football team, the Black Queens, have finally received their long-awaited bonuses from the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), following their emphatic win over Egypt in Accra on Tuesday.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports settled the outstanding payments after the Queens thrashed Egypt 4-0 in the second leg of their 2026 WAFCON qualifier at the Accra Sports Stadium, sealing a 7-0 aggregate victory to secure their place at next year’s tournament.

Each player received a cheque worth $9,000 for finishing third at the 2024 WAFCON in Morocco, although $500 was deducted as tax.

The payment comes as a relief to the squad after a tense standoff with the Sports Ministry earlier in the week. Players had threatened to boycott the Egypt clash, skipping two consecutive training sessions in protest over the delayed bonuses.

Following a series of meetings between team representatives and ministry officials, head coach Kim Lars Björkegren’s side returned to training on the eve of the match, and responded on the pitch in style.

The players were presented with their cheques at their base, the Erata Hotel, shortly after the final whistle.

The Black Queens are expected to break camp on Wednesday, October 29, before reassembling in late November to prepare for an international friendly against England on December 2.

The resolution marks the end of a drawn-out bonus dispute and restores focus on the team’s promising campaign as they look ahead to next year’s continental showdown.
