Former Ghana captain Andre Ayew has sent an emotional message to the Black Queens, urging them to stay focused on their achievements and not let the ongoing issue of unpaid bonuses overshadow their recent success.
The Black Queens recently boycotted training in protest over outstanding payments from their 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign in Morocco, where they finished third.
Ayew, who captained the Black Stars for over a decade, appealed to the players to maintain their unity and sense of pride despite the financial challenges.
“You guys did something great a few months ago at the WAFCON,” Ayew said. “It’s important that you don’t let this legacy be erased by noise and outside people talking about unpaid bonuses.”
The experienced forward, who has represented Ghana at multiple World Cups and AFCON tournaments, reminded the team of the bigger picture, urging them not to let the situation damage their historic progress.
“I’ve been there as a player, and you guys are building something the Black Queens have never had,” he added. “Don’t tarnish what you have achieved because of money. Yes, money is important, I’ll be the first to say that, but it’s about national pride.”
Ayew’s message comes as the Black Queens prepare for their crucial return leg against Egypt in the 2026 WAFCON qualifiers on Tuesday, October 28, at the Accra Sports Stadium. Ghana holds a 3-0 advantage from the first leg in Ismailia.
With mounting public sympathy for the players’ plight, Ayew’s words serve as both encouragement and a reminder of the pride associated with representing Ghana on the continental stage.
