Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku says he is “totally surprised” by public debate over the future of Black Stars head coach Otto Addo, despite the trainer successfully guiding Ghana to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Addo, who previously worked as an assistant coach at Borussia Dortmund, led the national team to five victories in their final six World Cup qualifiers, securing Ghana’s fifth appearance at the global tournament. He also becomes the first Ghanaian coach to qualify the Black Stars for back-to-back World Cups, having done so for the 2022 edition in Qatar.
However, his record in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, where Ghana went winless and missed out on the upcoming tournament in Morocco has sparked debate among fans and pundits about his long-term suitability.
Okraku, though, insists the criticism is misplaced.
“For me, I was totally surprised,” the GFA President told 3Sports.
“As to how that conversation started, it’s something that still surprises me. Otto Addo comes back, plays eight games, wins seven, draws one and then all of a sudden, people are talking about the future of the coach.”
Addo is expected to remain in charge as the Black Stars continue preparations for the World Cup, with upcoming friendlies against Japan and South Korea on their Asian tour next month.
The draw for the 2026 FIFA World Cup will take place on 5 December in Washington, where Ghana will learn their group-stage opponents as anticipation builds for another shot on the global stage.
