Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has reiterated plans to review the Computerized School Placement System (CSSPS), saying it is not serving the country well and has created frustration among parents and students.
According to the minister, he has observed that some parents and students are unhappy because they were denied their choice of course and preferred schools.
The Tamale South MP said he has establish a committee chaired by the Mfantseman SHS headmaster, tasked to collaborate with stakeholders to review the performance of the system over the past decade and recommend credible alternatives to ensure merit-based admissions.
The minister was speaking at the annual Conference of Directors of Education (CODE) 32nd annual general meeting in Sunyani on Tuesday on the theme “the role stakeholders in resetting attitudes towards positive discipline at the pre-tertiary education level.
Annually, CODE organizes a national conference for this influential group of directors to deliberate on Pre-Tertiary education policies, programmes, and directives and offer recommendations to inform educational policies.
Haruna Iddrisu also warned against illegal charging for school placements, vowing to dismiss any head teacher or individuals who go contrary to the directive.
The education minister told Kaakyire Kwasi Afari of Sunyani-based Ark fm that his ministry will launch an investigation into all alleged extortion on the school placement system.
The education minister credited former President Nana Akufo-Addo for ensuring the enhancement of the Free SHS policy.
But, he was quick to blame the former President for not prioritizing infrastructure advancement, a key component of quality education, pledging Mahama’s commitment for improved infrastructure.
He mentioned upgraded category B schools to Category A.
