Ghanaian-born forward Francis Amuzu has clarified that his decision to represent Ghana at international level is not influenced by the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Gremio attacker, who holds both Ghanaian and Belgian nationality, explained that his commitment to the Black Stars stems from a long-standing personal decision, not a strategic move ahead of the global tournament.
“To be honest, it is not for the World Cup,” Amuzu said in an interview with Asempa FM. “Two years ago, I made my Ghanaian passport. Now I’m reading news that because of the World Cup I want to come. No, it is not because of that. It is also part of my decision to play, also because of my father.”
Amuzu’s comments come amid growing anticipation over several dual-national players expressing interest in joining Ghana’s national team ahead of the World Cup.
The 25-year-old, who has been in impressive form for Brazilian side Gremio, said his decision is driven by identity and family pride rather than career opportunity.
If called up, Amuzu could bolster Ghana’s attacking options as the team prepares for the world cup.
