The Ghana Education Service (GES) has warned that any school head who flouts its directive to the secondary schools to admit not more than 500 new students in the 2004/2005 academic year, will be held personally responsible. It has explained that the directive is dictated by the current spate of undisciplined student behaviour and the inadequate facilities with which many schools in Ghana are having to contend. Mr. Ato Essuman, chief director of the ministry of education, youth and sports (MoEYS) said,
?The directive is in accordance with an ongoing policy that is geared towards reducing the student population of all schools, over a three year period, to maximum of 1,500. Clarifying further, the acting GES director general, Michael Nsowah said that the restriction of the student population would make it more likely that teachers would get to know students individually. This he believed would make it easier for teachers to instill discipline in their students.
