The High Court in Accra has freed Gregory Afoko and another accused individual in the case involving the death of Adams Mahama, a former Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Afoko had been standing trial alongside Asabke Alangdi, who has already been convicted, for allegedly taking part in the fatal attack on Mahama in May 2015.
During proceedings on Monday, December 1, Justice Marie-Louise Simmons discharged the two men after noting that the case had been adjourned more than six consecutive times without any progress.
The judge also dissolved the jury, as only five out of the required seven members were present in court.
Adams Mahama died from severe acid burns after an attack outside his home in Bolgatanga on May 20, 2015.
The incident sparked widespread public interest and led to the arrest of Afoko shortly after the attack. Alangdi, who fled the country following the incident, was later arrested and subsequently convicted.
Afoko’s trial has faced several delays over the years, resulting in multiple restarts and repeated jury-related challenges.
