President John Dramani Mahama expressed confidence that the country will soon elect its first female president, marking a significant milestone in its political leadership.

Speaking at the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women in Beijing, China, Mahama highlighted Ghana’s progress in promoting women’s empowerment and gender equality.

“I am confident that, in the very near future, our women will break the glass ceiling and that a woman will be president of the Republic of Ghana,” he said.

President Mahama emphasized that Ghana’s efforts to promote women into leadership roles are not tokenistic but rather a deliberate attempt to entrench gender equality in national governance.

He cited historic milestones, including the election of Ghana’s first female Vice President and the appointment of women to key roles in government, judiciary, and security services.

The President however reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to empowering women and achieving gender parity across national institutions.

He acknowledged global efforts toward gender equality but noted that persistent gaps and structural barriers continue to hinder progress.

“Yet, as we review its implementation, persistent gaps and structural barriers continue to slow our collective march toward equality, and we must therefore act with even greater resolve and innovation” Mahama stated.

Mahama’s remarks were part of his address at the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women, which commemorated 30 years since the 1995 Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action on gender equality.
