The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) has confirmed that fifteen people, including eleven children, have died following a boat disaster near Kete Krachi in the Oti Region on Saturday, October 11, 2025.
According to the Authority, the vessel, which was reportedly carrying passengers beyond its capacity, capsized while crossing a section of the Volta Lake. The victims included children aged between two and fourteen years, along with four adults. Four others were rescued.
In a statement, the GMA described the tragedy as “deeply heartbreaking” and extended condolences to the affected families and the Kete Krachi community.
A team comprising Maritime Inspectors and members of the Navy Task Force has been dispatched to the area to investigate the cause of the accident and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
The Authority also announced plans to establish a Casualty Investigations Committee in partnership with the Ministry of Transport to review water transport safety protocols and recommend urgent reforms to prevent future disasters.
As part of broader enforcement measures, the GMA has initiated a lakeside safety operation aimed at stopping unsafe boating practices on the Volta Lake. Boats found to be overloaded or operating without safety equipment will be seized, and their operators prosecuted.
“The GMA remains resolute in its commitment to ensuring safer water transport across the country,” the statement noted.
The Authority further urged passengers and residents along the Volta Lake to prioritize safety when traveling by boat.
“Do not board any vessel that is visibly overloaded or lacks life jackets. Refusing to board could save your life — or a child’s,” the GMA advised.
