Government Approves Sports Levy to Boost Ghana’s Sports Development Fund

Ghana is set to establish a dedicated funding system for sports after cabinet approved a proposal to introduce a Sports Levy as the primary source of revenue for the long-awaited Sports Development Fund.

The initiative, championed by President John Mahama, aims to provide sustainable financial support for national federations, athletes, and sports infrastructure across the country.

Treasurer of the Ghana Olympic Committee, Evans Yeboah, confirmed the development in an interview with JoySports, revealing that the bill will soon be presented to Parliament.

“There is an incoming Sports Levy that would go into the fund, and there is also a top-up from the Gaming Commission. So, there will be a revolving fund within that sector,” Yeboah explained.

He added that government plans to operationalise the Sports Fund by 2026, once parliamentary approval is secured.

“It got cabinet approval two weeks ago and is expected to reach Parliament soon. We are hoping that by the end of this year, or by the first quarter of next year, the Sports Fund will be launched to assist all national federations,” he said.

According to Yeboah, the Fund will serve as the Ministry of Sports and Recreation’s main revenue source, helping finance both capital and operational projects across all disciplines.

“There is going to be a pool of funds reserved to assist national federations, with top priority given to global competitions such as world championships,” he added.

The move has been widely welcomed by sports administrators, who have long called for a more sustainable approach to funding sports development in Ghana.

If implemented, the Sports Levy could mark a significant turning point, providing consistent financial backing for athletes and helping Ghana reclaim its sporting dominance on the continental and global stage.
