Mrs. Cecilia Gyan-Amoah, the MP for Asutifi South is the first woman parliamentarian of the NPP to lose the opportunity to contest the December election on the ticket of the party in the constituency.
In a tension packed constituency primary held at Dadiesoaba, near Goaso, on Tuesday, Mr. Thomas Broni, the deputy minister of the Interior, defeated Mrs. Gyan-Amoa by 41 votes to 33 to become the NPP parliamentary candidate for the constituency. The security personnel had it pretty tough controlling supporters of both candidates who wanted to create confusion before and after the polls.
So tense was the situation that the security personnel had to hold the unruly supporters at bay and allow only the dignitaries, delegates, constituency and regional NPP executives and the Asutifi district electoral commission officials to enter the Dadiesoaba Methodist church, which was the venue for the polls.
In his acceptance speech, Mr. Broni, who is also the chairman of the Ghana National Commission of Small Arms, thanked the delegates in particular and the entire NPP members in general of the confidence reposed in him and promised to retain the parliamentary seat for the party.
