The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced a significant breakthrough in resolving its container logistics issues.
According to Ing. Julius Kpekpena, Acting Managing Director of ECG, the company has successfully traced all its missing containers and retrieved over 1,000 from the port.
“So far, we have moved over a thousand containers. I’m happy to say that we traced all of the containers and we started moving them from the port,” he said.
The ECG had faced significant challenges in accounting for over 1,300 containers at the Tema Port, which had raised concerns about the company’s logistics management. However, Ing. Kpekpena noted that the company has made “a lot of progress” since May, when many of the containers could not be traced.
“We’ve managed to curb outages. We are not saying that we have eliminated outages, but we’ve worked to curb outages, and we are continuing to put in measures to make sure that we don’t go back to what we came to meet,” he added.
The company’s efforts to stabilize the power supply have also shown positive results, with measures in place to minimize outages.
This development comes after an investigative report revealed discrepancies in the number of containers accounted for by ECG, leading to concerns over procurement breaches and logistics management.
According to the report, ECG had claimed to have 2,491 uncleared containers containing cables and other equipment, but an independent audit at the port found only 1,134, leaving 1,347 unaccounted for.
The report also indicated that issues with the company’s procurement practices, including the awarding of contracts to firms without the necessary licenses and the merging of the procurement directorate with the Housing and Estate unit.
Despite these challenges, ECG’s current management said they are working to ensure that the power supply is stabilized and that outages are minimized.
With the successful tracing and retrieval of its missing containers, ECG is taking steps towards resolving its logistics challenges and improving its overall performance.
