Ghana-Togo brotherliness is mutually beneficial

From: Dominic Adoboli, GNA Special Correspondent, Togo

Lome (Togo), Sept. 1, GNA – Mr Hackman Owusu-Agyeman, the Minister of the Interior, has appealed to Ghanaian and Togolese security personnel at the Ghana-Togo border at Aflao to sustain the security cooperation between them at the frontier.

He said the effective security collaboration between personnel of the two sister states along the frontier had reduced cross-border crimes. “You need to cooperate to fight human, drug and ammunition trafficking as well as international terrorism.”

The Minister said this in a brief interaction with officials of Togolese security agencies at Kodzoviakope in Lome when he visited Aflao on Tuesday as part of his working tour of border posts and other towns in the Volta Region.

“It is in the spirit of ECOWAS (economic Community of West African States) that we need to strengthen the existing security cooperation to ensure terrorists, human, drug and ammunition traffickers and criminals in general do not penetrate our frontiers”, Mr Owusu-Agyeman said.

He praised the cooperation between the two governments that had led to the arrest of Ghanaian criminals, who went into hiding in Togo and called for vigilance to ensure peace for development of the West Africa Sub-Region.

“We need to encourage you to continue the cooperation so that West Africa in general and Togo and Ghana in particular would be at peace as crime knows no boundary,” Mr Owusu-Agyeman said.

Mr Kanaza Kossi, the Togolese Commander of Customs at the frontier, who led a team of his officers and men to the Ghana side of the border to welcome the Minister and his entourage, said they were always overwhelmed when they met Ghanaian officials and reiterated the essence of cooperation.

He asked that in the future Togolese officials should be notified of such visits so that their top officials would be available for top-level discussions.
