Eastern Regional GJA commends stakeholders for peaceful Akwatia by-election

The Eastern Regional branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has expressed its profound gratitude to the Electoral Commission, security agencies, political parties, and the people of Akwatia for ensuring a peaceful by-election on September 2, 2025.

In a statement signed by Stephen Ampem Darko-Koranteng, Eastern Regional Chairman of the GJA, on Thursday, September 4, 2025, the association commended the Electoral Commission for the “professional organization and management of the electoral process.”

The Ghana Police Service and other security agencies were also praised for their dedication to safeguarding journalists before, during, and after the polls.

The statement further applauded the main contenders—the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and their supporters—for “demonstrating political maturity.” It also recognized the role of civil society groups, election observers, and the media for their contributions in ensuring timely, factual, and balanced coverage.

The GJA thanked the people of Akwatia for turning out in large numbers to exercise their constitutional right in a peaceful and orderly manner, thereby reinforcing Ghana’s reputation as a beacon of democracy in Africa.

Reaffirming its mission, the association stressed its commitment to “promoting responsible journalism that upholds transparency, peace, and the consolidation of Ghana’s democracy.”

The Akwatia by-election was won by the NDC’s Bernard Bediako Baidoo, who polled 18,199 votes out of 33,819 valid ballots cast.

His closest contender, Solomon Kwame Asumadu of the NPP, secured 15,235 votes, while Owusu Patrick of the Liberal Progressive Party (LPP) managed 82 votes.
