Liverpool manager Arne Slot has strongly condemned the racial abuse aimed at Bournemouth striker Antoine Semenyo during Friday night’s Premier League opener at Anfield.
Semenyo, who struck twice in Bournemouth’s 4-2 defeat, was subjected to abuse in the opening half of the match. Liverpool have confirmed they are supporting a police investigation into the incident.
“It’s under investigation with the police now,” Slot told reporters. “The club statement made very clear how we feel about this. It’s unacceptable in every football stadium, let alone at Anfield.”
The Dutchman revealed he had spoken to the Ghanaian forward after the game, praising his resilience and performance in difficult circumstances.
“Big credit to him when something like this happens and you can perform so well in the second half,” Slot said. “He’s not only a great player but very strong mentally. Wherever we can help him, we will.”
Liverpool said they would work closely with the authorities to ensure the perpetrator is held accountable.
Despite the incident, Semenyo’s brace was a reminder of his growing influence for Bournemouth. After scoring 11 league goals last season, the 24-year-old is again expected to play a key role in the Cherries’ push for another strong campaign in the top flight.
