Mr. Samuel Duodu Ampofo, an Inspector with the Energy Commission, has advised individuals to prioritize hiring Certified Electrical Wiring Professionals (CEWP) who possess verifiable certification for wiring tasks to mitigate the risk of electrical fires.
Mr. Samuel Duodu Ampofo emphasized that property owners should ensure that, after the completion of wiring, the electrician arranges for a certified inspector to assess the quality of the work before it receives approval, thereby preventing potential fire-related disruptions in the future.
He warned electricians who lack valid licenses to refrain from undertaking any form of house wiring and to seek proper licensing before conducting such operations to avoid penalties for violations.
Mr. Enock Oppong, Chairman of the Dormaa Branch of the Energy Commission of Ghana, highlighted the recent increase in fire outbreaks, predominantly attributed to electrical faults. Consequently, he urged unqualified electricians to refrain from accepting house wiring jobs and to ensure they complete the necessary procedures, acquire the requisite knowledge, and pass the Energy Commission examinations to become certified before accepting to do house and other wiring works. He said the Energy Commission intends to take stringent action against all unqualified and unlicensed electricians within the community.
He also appealed to landlords to avoid employing unlicensed and unqualified electricians for wiring services, even if tempted by lower costs.
