Wenchi Manhene alarmed over mining lease on 202-acre Land

The Wenchi Manhene, Osagyefo Ampem Anye Amoampong Tabrako, has expressed alarm over a mining lease granted for a 202-acre land within his jurisdiction.

He said the lease, issued on December 3, 2024, for quarry activities, has sparked concerns about the potential impact on the community and environment in Wenchi.

Speaking at a meeting with the Minerals Commission and the Bono Regional House of Chiefs, Wenchi Manhene stated that the company that acquired the lease failed to engage him directly, instead dealing with his sub-chiefs.

According to him, he has raised various concerns, including attempts by some Chinese nationals, to engage in illegal mining under the guise of small-scale mining.

He told the gathering that his swift action foiled these activities, and he arrested two Chinese nationals.

However, he was disappointed to learn that they were not prosecuted by the police who claimed there was no case to prosecute.

Nana Amoampong Tabrako called on the Minerals Commission to involve traditional leaders who own the land in the mining lease issuance process, emphasizing the need for transparency and inclusivity to protect the interests of local communities.

Responding to Wenchi Manhene’s concerns, former Minerals Commission CEO and policy review team lead, Mr. Benjamin Aye, assured that the issues would be forwarded to Accra for rectification.

Regarding the establishment of district offices, he cited lacks of funds as the primary constraint.

Mr. Aye emphasized the importance of regular engagement with chiefs to address such concerns.

The President of the Bono Regional House of Chiefs, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Dr. Agyeman Badu II expressed appreciation for the meeting, stating that it had enlightened their understanding of the Minerals Act and other critical mining issues.

He added that the engagement had also helped the chiefs recognize their role in making mining beneficial to their communities.
