Government Announces 62.58% Increase in Cocoa Producer Price for 2025/2026 Season

The government has announced a significant adjustment to the cocoa producer price for the 2025/2026 crop season, raising it from US$3,100 to US$5,040 per tonne.

This new price reflects a 62.58% increase in dollar terms and was approved by the Producer Price Review Committee (PPRC), chaired by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson. The revised rate will take effect when the new cocoa season opens on Thursday, August 7, 2025.

The announcement follows months of pricing reviews by technical committees and extensive consultations with key stakeholders.

President John Mahama, in July, reiterated his government’s pledge to guarantee cocoa farmers at least 70% of the world market price, describing the move as part of efforts to restore fairness and dignity to farmers, who remain the backbone of Ghana’s agriculture.

As of Sunday, August 3, 2025, cocoa traded at about US$7,555 per tonne on the international market.

By comparison, the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration set the Free on Board (FOB) value for the 2024/2025 season at US$4,850 per tonne, with a producer price of US$3,100, representing 63.9% of the FOB despite higher global prices at the time.

Government sources explained that the new FOB figure factors in outstanding contracts covering 100,000 tonnes of cocoa sold at US$2,600 per tonne during the 2023/2024 crop season, along with projections for the upcoming season.

At an average exchange rate of GH₵10.25 to US$1, the revised producer price translates to GH₵51,660 per tonne, up from GH₵49,600, equivalent to GH₵3,228.75 per 64 kg bag.

Additionally, the PPRC has approved updated margins and fees for major players in the cocoa value chain, including licensed buying companies, hauliers, warehouse operators, and quality control divisions.
