Nkoranza (B/A), Aug. 24, GNA – The Non-Formal Education Division (NFED) has organized a two-week training workshop at Nkoranza in Brong Ahafo on the “Expanded Functional English Project” for 70 facilitators of the Functional Literacy Programme.
It is aimed at equipping them with knowledge and skills to lead adult learners in studying the English Language.
The participants were drawn from Dormaa-Ahenkro, Kintampo, Techiman, Atebubu, Sene and Nkoranza districts.
Mr Kwasi Oppong, Brong-Ahafo Regional NFED Director, said the project started barely three years ago was aimed at encouraging first trained adult learners to learn Basic English Language and to become abreast with simple English words and sentences.
He said the new functional literacy project was established through the collaborative efforts of the World Vision International, Ghana and NFED, adding, “the project is just a transfer and translation of the Ghanaian Language primer lessons into English”.
Mr Oppong noted that studies had revealed that adult learners were studying to become proficient in the English Language.
Mr Oppong said that lessons under the programme covered health, agriculture, education and community empowerment.
“Subjects such as environmental sanitation, teenage pregnancy and HIV/AIDS are treated under health, while voting, tree planting, payment of levies and taxes and bushfires are treated separately under other headings,” he said.
Nana Frempah Quarshie, NFED Officer at Techiman Municipal Office and a Resource Person, commended community leaders for ensuring that, people enrolled in adult classes.
Nana Quarshie advised the facilitators to share ideas with their community leaders to help them address problems to keep the programme on course.
