Volta Region to Become Ghana’s Next Industrial Powerhouse with $200M Kenaf Initiative

The Volta Region is set to rise as Ghana’s newest industrial and agricultural frontier, following the launch of an ambitious $200 million Kenaf production initiative that promises to transform the local economy and create over 1,500 jobs.

Kenaf, a climate-resilient crop prized for its versatility, is at the heart of this revival. With 5,000 hectares of land already secured in South Tongu, the region is preparing to host large-scale planting and seed multiplication projects. The initiative is expected to kick off in earnest this August, with the arrival of a Malaysian technical team to begin pilot trials.

“This is more than just a farming project, it’s an economic revolution for Volta,” said a local agricultural development officer involved in the project.

Kenaf matures in just 90 days, making it a fast, high-yield crop with over 30 commercial uses, ranging from biodegradable packaging and cosmetics to edible oils and animal feed. It is also used in producing eco-friendly construction materials and textiles, giving it a unique place in the global push for sustainable manufacturing.

According to project planners, a 1,000-hectare Kenaf plantation alone could generate up to $200 million in annual revenue, opening new export channels for Ghana while reducing the country’s reliance on traditional cash crops.

“Kenaf represents a new future for our farmers, one rooted in sustainability, value-addition, and global competitiveness,” said a representative from the Ministry of Agriculture.

The project is being spearheaded in partnership with Malaysian agribusiness experts, with plans to integrate advanced agronomy techniques and machinery into the Volta Region’s farming landscape.

For local communities, the Kenaf industry means job creation, training opportunities, and improved livelihoods. The project is also expected to attract supporting industries, from processing plants to packaging and logistics firms, accelerating the region’s transformation into an industrial hub.

As the first seeds prepare to be sown, excitement is building across Volta, with stakeholders optimistic that this initiative could serve as a blueprint for agro-industrial development across Ghana.
