Suspected criminal stabs Policeman at Lower McCarthy Hill

A policeman was stabbed on Monday by a suspected criminal at Lower McCarthy Hill in Accra.

The policeman, identified as Sammy, was accompanying his children to school when he was suddenly attacked by the suspect with a knife.

The suspect is said to have approached the policeman who was in a plain cloth upon spotting him around 7am.

A resident in the area told Graphic Online that the suspect is a known ‘wee’ smoker in the area and that he is somebody the policeman is said to have confronted before and warned him to desist from nefarious activities.

Apparently, as the suspect was not happy about the caution, when he spotted the policeman on Monday morning, he decided to attack him with the knife.

In an attempt to disarm the criminal, the policeman (Sammy), reportedly fired several shots at close range at him, but the bullet did not hit the target as the suspect was said to have fortified himself with some black power (juju).

It was after the failed attempt to subdue the suspect that he tried to take the pistol away from the policeman, who held on to it firmly.

According to an eyewitness, it was in the ensuing struggle that the policeman was stabbed in the right rib, after which the suspect took to his heels.

The witness, Quartey said the suspect lived with the mother in the area and was said to be a criminal, harassing residents.

“Sometimes he would come with some boys on a motorbike, disturbing everybody,” he said.

Sammy, who survived the attack, is currently receiving treatment at the Police Hospital in Accra.

The police have confirmed the incident, saying that the matter is under investigation.

The Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Regional Police Command, Superintendent Juliana Obeng, confirmed the incident.
