Oti Region Tensions: Guan community decries bias and violence, threatens retaliation should the government fail to intervene

The Guan community, the Akyodes in the Nkwanta South Municipality of the Oti Region is decrying what they claim is a surge in violent attacks and killings targeting their members, coupled with biased reporting from local media outlets. They allege that these attacks have intensified since the National Democratic Congress (NDC) came to power.

The Guan Akyodes family group said the Challa, Adales, and other members of the Kotokoli tribes and a team of men led by one Basara man called Suraj of uniting to “torment” their lives with impunity. They said that these tribes strengthened their alliance prior to the 2024 election, with the intention of acting against the Guan community should the NDC win.

According to the Guan Akyodes representatives, many journalists within the Nkwanta South area are exacerbating the situation by providing biased coverage that favors the aforementioned tribes.

They suggest that the media’s alleged partiality stems from tribal affiliations.

The Guan Akyode community is now urging the government to intervene urgently to prevent further escalation of the violence. They also issued a stern warning, threatening to retaliate if the attacks on their members and the alleged unfair treatment continue.

“We are urging the government to intervene before things get worse,” a spokesperson for the Guan Akyodes family said. “We will not stand idly by while our innocent members are attacked. If this unfair treatment and violence persist, we will be forced to retaliate, and the situation will only worsen.”

The allegations of ethnic bias and the threat of retaliation raise serious concerns about the stability of the Nkwanta South Municipality and highlight the need for swift and impartial action by the government to de-escalate tensions and ensure the safety of all residents.

Meanwhile, a tape recording in possession of this reporter reveals thundering voices allegedly from the aforementioned tribes, threatening the lives of the Guan Akyodes, urging them to leave the land since the NDC has come to power.

“Now, we are warning the Guans to pack out. This is our time, we told them to pack on the very day they see the NDC party emerging as winners. Now the NDC is in power, they are not going to have any space to breathe”. The recordings in the tape indicate.

In addition, the SHS Student who received a stray bullet and lost his life in Nkwanta Township was as a result of some armed men disguised in army uniform who were chasing and, shooting to kill one Akyode man who overran them and unfortunately the bullet penetrated through the classroom and got the student. We want this to be mentioned to the public that it is not the Akyodes who killed the boy as they have allegedly accused the Akyodes of the death of the student.
