Kumasi Asante Kotoko were the toast of Ghanaian football on Sunday after staging a thrilling second-half comeback to defeat arch-rivals Accra Hearts of Oak 2-1 in the 2025 President’s Cup, a victory that earned them more than just bragging rights.
In a gesture of appreciation, Minister for Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Adams, presented the team with a GH¢10,000 cash reward following the match, praising their fighting spirit and determination.
The dramatic showdown, held at the Accra Sports Stadium, saw Hearts of Oak take an early lead after capitalising on a defensive lapse in the first half. But Kotoko returned from the break with renewed energy, scoring twice to seal a famous comeback win in front of a raucous crowd.
Speaking to the Kotoko players at their hotel after the match, Hon. Adams congratulated the team and presented the cash reward as a token of support for their efforts.
“I have also given you, for your drive back, GH¢10,000. When you get there, you can buy some water,” the Minister said light-heartedly, drawing laughter from players and staff.
More seriously, he pledged full support for Kotoko’s future ambitions, particularly their continental aspirations.
“Congratulations. Our target is the continental level, we will be there to support,” Adams added. “We will do everything. We will mobilise, personally and at the national level, to do whatever it takes so that you can win.”
Kotoko’s triumph marks a significant morale boost ahead of the new domestic season and a potential campaign in African club competitions. With their fierce rivals Hearts left to regroup, the Porcupine Warriors walk away not only with silverware, but with renewed belief and the backing of the nation’s sports leadership.
Chants of “We are the champions, Kumasi Asante Kotoko!” rang out into the Accra night, as the team celebrated another memorable chapter in Ghana’s most storied football rivalry.
