Oforikrom residents appeal to KMA to clear refuse

Kumasi (Ashanti), 7 Dec. ’98 — Residents of Oforikrom in Kumasi, have appealed to the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), to ensure the regular clearance of refuse at the premises of the Oforikrom Junior Secondary School (JSS) to forestall an outbreak of an epidemic. Mr Gabriel Kwadwo Dwomoh, assemblyman for Oforikrom, a suburb of Kumasi, who made the appeal over the weekend on behalf of the residents, said the school has been engulfed by refuse which poses a health hazard to teachers, pupils and residents of the area. Speaking after some youth groups had undertaken a clean-up exercise at Oforikrom, he deplored the attitude of residents who defecate around the school premises. The Oforikrom Fun and Lumber Club, Amakom Youngsters and Ash- Town youth club took part in the exercise which was organised by the Oforikrom Students Union . They desilted drains along the Oforikrom-Accra highway and the Oforikrom-Anloga road, swept and cleared refuse. Mr Dwomoh commended the youth for their concern for the environmental sanitation of the area and called on other social clubs to emulate them. Mr Alex Afriyie, chairman of the Oforikrom Students Union, appealed to organisations to assist the union with materials to construct wooden litter boxes to be placed at vantage points to keep the area clean.
