Ghanaian midfielder Michael Baidoo has joined Qatari Stars League side Umm Salal SC on a season-long loan from Plymouth Argyle. The 26-year-old’s move comes as the Doha-based club looks to strengthen its squad ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.
Baidoo, who previously impressed during his time at Swedish side Elfsborg, found challenges adapting to the English Championship. After joining Plymouth last season, he managed only 13 appearances across all competitions, as the club struggled and eventually faced relegation to League One.
Despite a tough stint in England, Baidoo’s earlier success in Sweden remains a highlight. He played over 60 games for Elfsborg, showcasing his goal-scoring instincts from midfield and becoming a key figure in their Allsvenskan campaigns. His performances drew interest from clubs in Europe and the Middle East, paving the way for this new chapter in Qatar.
Umm Salal SC is keen to leverage Baidoo’s experience and skills as they aim to improve on last season’s mid-table finish in the Qatari Stars League. The move also marks another step in Baidoo’s professional journey, which began at Vision FC in Ghana before taking him to Norway, Sweden, England, and now Qatar.
Baidoo’s arrival highlights the growing trend of Ghanaian players exploring opportunities in the Gulf region, where competitive football and financial incentives are attracting talent from across the globe.
