A former Director of the Ghana Law School, Mr. Kwaku Ansah-Asare, has called on embattled Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo to apologise to the nation for what he described as “disrespect” towards President John Mahama.
Speaking on TV3’s ‘KeyPoints’ on Saturday, June 28, Mr. Ansah-Asare criticised the Chief Justice’s decision to hold a press conference on June 25, during which she described the ongoing Article 146 removal proceedings as politically motivated.
“The press conference was uncalled for and disrespectful. She must apologise to the nation for her actions,” Mr. Ansah-Asare said.
He emphasized that the President was constitutionally bound to act on the petition submitted against the Chief Justice and had no discretionary powers in the matter.
“She knows the President’s hands are tied under Article 146. As Chief Justice, she swore the President into office, and he, in turn, vowed to uphold the Constitution. What does she expect him to do?” he questioned.
Mr. Ansah-Asare’s comments come amid growing public debate over the Chief Justice’s handling of the situation, with opinions sharply divided on the appropriateness of her public statements.
The Article 146 proceedings, which seek to determine the Chief Justice’s removal, have raised broader questions about judicial accountability and the separation of powers.
