NRSA AND THE AYAWASO WEST MUNICIPAL ASSEMBLY HAS REMOVED UNAUTHORIZED BILLBOARDS

A joint team from the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) and the Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly has begun removing unauthorized billboards in the area, citing traffic flow obstruction and environmental aesthetic concerns.

The NRSA has been vocal about the dangers of billboards obstructing visibility, especially on medians, roundabouts, and intersections. This action follows a 21-day ultimatum given to Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the Greater Accra Region to remove such structures.

The Director-General of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), Abraham Amaliba, Esq NRSA has highlighted that billboards, particularly those on medians, can significantly obstruct the view of drivers and pedestrians, leading to potential accidents. Beyond safety, the removal also addresses the aesthetic degradation caused by poorly placed and unauthorized billboards. The NRSA, along with the Advertising Association of Ghana, is working with local assemblies to ensure compliance with regulations.

The NRSA and AAG are establishing a joint committee and developing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to streamline billboard regulations and enforcement. Assemblies that fail to comply with the removal directive by the deadline could face legal action, according to the NRSA. Mr. Abraham said, the NRSA is actively communicating the need for safe billboard placement and encouraging public awareness regarding the hazards of unauthorized structures
