The kind of leadership we’ve had over the years is very “sour”…former G/A Reg. Sec. NPP

Former Greater Accra Regional Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Eric Gregory Kwatia, has criticized the party’s leadership, describing it as “sour” and “painful.”

Speaking on Ghana Kasa on June 23, 2025, Kwatia defended the party’s decision to hold presidential primaries in January, citing the party’s constitution, which allows for primaries to be organized within two years after a general election defeat.

“The party’s constitution agrees with the decision, stating that after a general election defeat, we have at least two years to organize primaries to elect a flagbearer, enabling them to prepare adequately,” Kwatia explained.

However, he expressed concern over the party’s leadership, asserting that elected executives often prioritize personal interests over party unity.

Kwatia cited instances where party executives take sides during internal contests, only to downplay their actions after the election. “How can an executive support a candidate in a party contest and then claim it’s nothing after the election?” he queried.

He questioned the purpose of electing executives if they fail to uphold party unity.

“Executives are expected to conduct elections and ensure unity after the election. How can they take sides and expect us to trust them?” Kwatia asked, drawing likeness with the country’s general elections.

He wondered if citizens would trust an Electoral Commissioner who takes sides in a general election.

Kwatia’s stated that “all these issues linger because our National Executive Council sits idly by, and this bias has brought us to this level.”

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially announced Saturday, January 31, 2026, as the date for its presidential primary to elect a flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.

The announcement was made by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, following a critical meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) held on Tuesday, June 17, 2025. The decision was subsequently endorsed by the party’s National Council.
