Head of Education, Research and Training at the Motor Traffic and Transport Department, Chief Superintendent Alexander Obeng, has warned road users against the use of mobile phones to peddle on social media while plying the road.

In an interview, Chief Superintendent Alexander Obeng asserted that using a phone while on the road is against their regulations.

Chief Superintendent Alexander Obeng further warned that communication devices will distract one’s purpose for using the road, risking the safety of the individual, most importantly while driving.

“If you hold it, you will get distracted because you will need both hands behind the steering for your own safety,” he cautioned. He said the eyes cannot look into the windshield and driving mirror and same eye into the phone while behind the steer.

He furthered that most countries Ghana look up to in terms of good road infrastructure have proper road infrastructure and interventions that ensure their road system is adequate enough for road users, and even when broken down, they’re fixed in the shortest possible time.

This, he said, cannot be said of Ghana, seeing it as a challenge which he advised that road safety advocates must press hard on road engineers who sit at the Ministry of Roads and Highways, Ghana Highway Authority, Urban Roads and FIDA Road to act on the challenges owing that it is their responsibility.

“I will advise road safety advocates to press hard on engineers who sit at the Ministry of Roads and Highways, Ghana Highway Authority, Urban Roads and FIDA Road to fix these challenges since it’s their responsibility,” he stated.

He appealed that these things are crucial to be enforced most importantly in police urbanized jurisdiction in Ghana’s all 16 regions and all major towns.

He stated that “the roads must be re-engineered, road markings must be provided, streetlights must be functioning, the traffic lights must also be functioning with appropriate signal controllers so that we can protect lives and enhance the safety of police officers”.
