Former world boxing champion Amir Khan has lauded Sharaf and Shahid Mahama, sons of Ghana’s former President John Mahama, for their pivotal role in hosting the ‘Battle of the Beasts’ boxing event in Accra.
The high-profile event, featured a headline WBC Africa title bout between American Andrew Tabiti and Ghana’s Jacob Dickson. It was a collaborative effort between Khan’s promotional company, AK Promotions, and Legacy Rise Sports, owned by the Mahama brothers.
Khan credited Sharaf and Shahid for introducing him to Ghana’s untapped potential as a destination for international boxing. “Many promoters wouldn’t even consider Ghana,” Khan said. “The focus has shifted to Saudi Arabia and other big-name venues. But Sharaf and Shahid reached out to me and encouraged us to take a chance on Ghana. They’ve been incredibly supportive.”
Describing the event as historic, Khan emphasized its significance for boxing in Africa. “It’s a new market with so much promise. I wanted to be part of something groundbreaking, and thanks to the President’s sons, we made it happen.”
The success of the ‘Battle of the Beasts’ has sparked excitement about Ghana’s potential to host more global sporting events, setting the stage for the country to shine in the international boxing arena.
