The National Executive Council (NEC) of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced January 31, 2026, as the date for its Presidential primaries. The decision was made during a high-level meeting held at the Alisa Hotel in Accra.
The meeting, chaired by First Vice Chairman Danquah Smith Buttey in the absence of National Chairman Stephen Ntim, focused on proposed constitutional reforms presented by a committee led by Prof. Mike Oquaye.
Notable attendees included former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, and Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako.
While nominations for the primaries are yet to open officially, several aspirants, including Dr. Bawumia, Kennedy Agyapong, and Dr. Bryan Acheampong, have already declared their intentions.
The primaries come on the heels of the NPP’s loss in the December 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections. The defeat prompted the formation of a committee chaired by Prof. Mike Oquaye to investigate the party’s poor performance. Leaked snippets of the committee’s findings suggest that the leadership of former President Akufo-Addo, ex-Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, and the candidacy of Dr. Bawumia were contributing factors.
The NPP’s upcoming primaries mark a critical juncture as the party seeks to redefine its strategy and regain political momentum ahead of the 2028 elections.
