Supreme Court Needs 20 Justices to Tackle Growing Caseloads – Justice Philip

Supreme Court Judge nominee Justice Philip Bright Mensah has recommended an expansion of Ghana’s Supreme Court to include at least 20 justices, citing the increasing volume and complexity of cases. His proposal came during his vetting by Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.

Justice Mensah argued that the Court’s current structure struggles to handle its extensive jurisdiction efficiently. “The cases are building up, and as they grow in number and complexity, it is only fair and reasonable to recruit more judges to ensure timely justice delivery,” he stated.

He emphasized that the proposed increase would enhance the Court’s ability to manage its workload and reduce delays. If adopted, the recommendation could reshape Ghana’s judicial landscape and bolster efforts to make the Supreme Court more effective and responsive.
