Supreme Court nominee Justice Senyo Dzamefe has passionately defended the recommendation to include at least three Ghana-based players in the Black Stars, pointing to the recent stellar performances of Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare as evidence of its merit.
Speaking during his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee, Justice Dzamefe referenced his role as chair of the Commission of Enquiry into the 2014 World Cup Scandal. The commission made the recommendation after Ghana’s dismal performance in Brazil, which was marred by allegations of corruption, financial mismanagement, and a player revolt that required the government to fly $3 million in cash to resolve.
Justice Dzamefe highlighted Asare’s clean sheets in Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar as a vindication of the policy. The 32-year-old, who also recently won Goalkeeper of the Year at the 2025 Ghana Football Awards, has proven that local talent can rise to international challenges. “You all saw the Hearts of Oak goalkeeper… he did very well in the post, conceding no goals,” Justice Dzamefe said, reinforcing the importance of investing in and showcasing homegrown talent.
