Ghana Shuts Tehran Embassy, Evacuates Citizens Amid Escalating Israel-Iran Conflict

In a swift response to escalating tensions between Israel and Iran, Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced the closure of the country’s embassy in Tehran and the immediate evacuation of all Ghanaians living in Iran.

The decision, announced on Monday, June 16, 2025, via a Facebook post, comes as the Mahama administration prioritizes the safety of its citizens amidst rising hostilities in the region.

“The Mahama Administration has, in the interest of the protection of Ghanaian lives, decided to immediately evacuate Ghanaians living in Iran following an escalation of the Israel-Iran conflict,” Hon. Ablakwa stated.

Diplomats, students, and professionals are being relocated through land borders as part of the evacuation efforts. The embassy in Tehran has ceased operations, and contingency plans are in place to monitor the safety of Ghanaians in other affected areas.

“We are equally keenly following developments in Israel and will advise shortly,” Ablakwa added. Embassy operations in Tel Aviv have been reduced to essential services, and Ghanaians in Israel have been urged to maintain close communication with the consular department.

The minister reassured the public of the government’s unwavering commitment to protecting Ghanaian lives. “No effort will be spared in ensuring the safety of our citizens and keeping them out of harm’s way,” he emphasized.

As tensions mount in the Middle East, Ghana has called for an immediate de-escalation of hostilities. “The Government of Ghana reiterates its demand on both parties to pursue diplomatic options and end hostilities,” Mr. Ablakwa stated, urging restraint from all sides.

This evacuation underscores Ghana’s proactive stance in ensuring the safety of its nationals amid global crises, highlighting the nation’s diplomatic agility and commitment to its citizens’ welfare.
