GPL: Nations FC Drops to Fifth After GFA Disciplinary Ruling, Players Face Charges

The Ghana Premier League (GPL) standings for the 2024-2025 season have been reshuffled following a disciplinary ruling by the Ghana Football Association (GFA). Nations Football Club, a Kumasi-based side, has been penalized for abandoning their match against Basake Holy Stars.

The controversial game saw Nations FC exit the field while trailing 1-0, a move deemed a violation of Article 33 (1)(b) of the GFA regulations. The GFA Disciplinary Committee awarded Basake Holy Stars three points and deducted three from Nations FC’s tally, dropping the latter from second to fifth place in the league with 57 points.

In addition to the points deduction, three Nations FC players, Rabin Ousmane Sanon, Kofi Mensah, and Emmanuel Annor face charges for their alleged involvement in incidents during the match. According to a GFA release, Rabin Sanon and Kofi Mensah are accused of assaulting match officials, while Mensah and Annor allegedly caused damage to the tunnel leading to the dressing room at the Ampain A.A.K. II Park.

These actions are in breach of the GFA Disciplinary Code (2019) and the Ghana Premier League Regulations (2019). The committee has yet to announce the specific penalties for the players, but the ruling has already sent ripples through the league.

Fans of Nations FC, who were hopeful for a strong finish this season, have expressed disappointment at the setback. Meanwhile, Basake Holy Stars have gained a crucial boost in their campaign.

The GFA emphasized its commitment to upholding the integrity of the league, with a spokesperson stating, “This decision reaffirms our zero-tolerance stance on misconduct and non-compliance with league regulations.”
