A 23-year-old taxi driver has been remanded into police custody after officers intercepted 120 slabs of suspected narcotic drugs from his vehicle at the Tetteh Quarshie roundabout in Accra.
The accused, Ernest Mohammed Agyir, was arrested on June 2 while driving a taxi with registration number GW 9832-22. According to the prosecution, the vehicle was stopped by members of the National Highway Patrol Department during routine checks along the Accra-Tema Motorway.
Three large fertiliser sacks were found in the boot of the car. Upon inspection, they were discovered to contain 120 compressed slabs of what authorities believe to be narcotic plant material.
Mr Agyir, who operates as a taxi driver in Agona Swedru in the Central Region, reportedly admitted during initial questioning that he was aware of the contents in his car. However, he told police he was only acting on instructions from a man identified as Abdul Shakur Osman, who allegedly contracted him to deliver the packages.
He has been charged with unlawful control of narcotic drugs but has not yet entered a plea. His case was heard at the Accra Circuit Court, presided over by Mr Isaac Addo, who ordered that the accused be remanded into custody and not interfere with ongoing investigations. The court also directed the police to intensify efforts to locate and apprehend the alleged owner of the drugs.
The prosecution, led by Detective Chief Inspector Abel Amanie, told the court that the seized substances have been sent to the Police Forensic Science Laboratory for further analysis.
Mr Agyir is expected to reappear in court on 23 June 2025.
