Mahama justifies GH¢1 fuel levy

President John Mahama has acknowledged the concerns following the approval of the GH¢1 new levy on petroleum products.

Speaking during the presentation of the final report from the National Economic Dialogue, the President admitted that the decision was difficult but necessary, adding it was not taken lightly.

He stressed that the levy is a necessary measure to rescue the energy sector from collapse and assured that the funds will be used to benefit all Ghanaians.

Mr. Mahama also pledged to implement measures addressing what he called deep-rooted inefficiencies and malpractice within the petroleum sector.

Parliament on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, by a Majority decision approved the Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Bill, 2025, introducing a GH¢1 levy on each litre of petroleum products.

The controversial bill seeks to raise extra revenue to address the nation’s crippling energy sector debt and secure stable power supply, has sparked widespread criticism.
