The Deputy Director of Forecasting at the Ghana Meteorological Agency, Mr. Joseph Portuphy has warned Ghanaians to be cautious ahead of heavy rainfall and lightening expected to downpour in June.
Speaking on FAWE FM’s Morning Show with Oheneba Kofi Dankwah, he stated that there will be more heavy rainfalls in June whiles what we experienced in May was just the beginning of what is ahead. He said areas near the forest zones like Aburi, Nsawam, Koforidua, Oda and neighboring towns are likely to experience rainfall every single day.
He added that, running water which surge into the sea from these areas contribute to the flooding in Accra and flood prone areas. Therefore, it is advisable to step out with umbrellas or raincoats which will enable smooth movement during the season.
He addressed that, whiles we’re experiencing heavy downpour lightening in June, there will be drizzling in the subsequent months leading to the harmattan season. He cautioned housebuilders and residents near water prone areas to relocate in order to curb disasters which occurs during raining seasons.
He therefore assured coastal areas to expect the rains in every 3-4 days.
“Expect more rains in this year’s season. It is likely to rain everyday especially those at the forest zones. Due to that I will urge inhabitants at flood prone areas to relocate so that we won’t get much flooding in this year’s rainy season. I will also advise everyone to go out with umbrellas and raincoats. After June, we will experience drizzling which will lead into the harmattan season.”
Moreover, Mr Portuphy disclosed that the scorch of the sun will determine the size of the downpour. However, it will drizzle from July to September where October to December comes along with harmattan.
He further explained south westering wind which is accompanied with moist in the air as what we’re experiencing recently due to its origin whiles North westering wind are expected to take over with dryness in the air heading towards harmattan.
