Akufo-Addo’s response on gay rights ‘appropriate’ – Expert

Communications Consultant, Dr. Doris Yaa Dartey, says the President’s response to the issue of homosexuality on Aljazeera was apt.

She said in the Western world in time past, issues of gay rights were anathema, but now issues of gay rights have come to stay.

Dr. Dartey said Ghanaians should be tolerant with homosexuals even though their actions may be offensive to the customs and traditions of Africa.

She said the President has been misunderstood.

Meanwhile, an Islamic Scholar, Sheikh Aremeyaw Shuaib says if the President had made a categorical statement on Ghana’s position on the issue of homosexual rights, the brouhaha will have been avoided.

He said the President was caught in the web of ‘a possible happening in the future’, where Ghana may pass a law granting gay rights, hence the ambiguity in his response.

Shiek Aremeyaw Shuaib said ambivalence in the President’s comment lies in the fact that he is a Human Rights Lawyer and a champion of democracy.
