International Relations and Security expert, Irbard Ibrahim, has warned that any attempt to legalise homosexuality will have negative security implications.
Speaking to Aljazeera’s Jane Dutton, President Akufo Addo said the country’s culture and tradition currently does not allow the legalization of homosexuality. He however added that if the public opinion changes at a point, the law may just be amended.
“…At the moment, I don’t feel, I don’t see that in Ghana there is that strong current of opinion that is saying this is something we need to deal with. It is not so far a matter that is on the agenda,”
The President’s response has attracted some criticisms with the former Deputy Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon. Joseph Yamin, attributing what he described as a shaky stance on homosexuality by the president to “a mere formality to please the influential homosexual community for aid”.
In an interview with Ekourba Gyasi on Atinka AM Drive, the International Relations and Security expert, Irard Ibrahim, explained that talks channeled towards the legalization of homosexuality will polarize the atmosphere, leading to needles confrontation between pro-gay activists and anti-gay activists.
He added that it will be proper for Ghana to make its position on homosexuality known to the international community to avoid future occurrences.
He advised the protocol at the presidency to ensure strict precautionary measures on the line of questioning when ‘fixing’ interviews for diplomats like the President.
“Open-ended questions should not be allowed in such interviews,” he said.
